Prolon Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD) Review

The most common reason people decide to embark on a fast is for the weight loss benefit. But, the true benefit of fasting is much more significant than shedding pounds. While the weight loss associated with a 5 day fast can be significant (5-7 lbs., on average), some of that is water weight. And without significant diet change, the weight will come back on.

The more pronounced health benefit of fasting is that it gives the body a rest from the oxidative processes (aka damage) of digestion. This is true even with intermittent fasting, or the 14 hours between dinner and breakfast. The Prolon Fasting Mimicking Diet was developed to provide the body with the full effect of a prolonged fast, without actually starving it. The small but calculated calories provided give a high chance of success when it comes to actually completing a 5 day fast.

Prolon is a proprietary formula developed by the world-renowned Dr. Valter Longo. Dr. Longo’s outlook on health and wellness is grounded in both ancient practices and modern science. The Prolon FMP is actually a 5 day meal plan, with daily energy counts between 800-1,150 calories. The literature claims that the plan provides not only a reduction in oxidation, but also allows for cell regeneration and repair. The foods provided are a combination of plant-based soups, nut bars, teas and supplements, designed to provide the effects of fasting while minimizing the hunger burden.

Each days stock of food and supplements is provided in its own numbered box.

Today is Day 1 of my fast.

I will post my daily food intake, as well as how I feel. I invite you to join me on this journey to learn about my successes and challenges, and ultimately if I experience any long-term benefits. (Please be advised of the disclaimers, below, prior to using the Prolon FMD.)

Day 1

I prepared myself physically and mentally for fasting by decreasing my calorie intake the past two days. Fruit for a late-morning break-fast, salad with protein for lunch, and a healthy dinner. No snacks. I proceeded to do my my usual intermittent fasting between dinner and late morning. It served me well to prepare and I woke up excited to begin.

Here are the complete contents of todays food box.

It’s mid-way through the day and I feel really good, just a little bit light headed. I like the variation from my normal diet, and am finding the food very tasty, with a great mouth-feel. One significant aspect for me is how much I am enjoying eating and how slowly I am chewing and savoring each
bite (almost as if it were my last! – I guess this is what happens to the brain when you know your food will be grossly limited). Lunch made me so full that I could barely finish…no lie!

Lunch – Day 1

There is a significant amount of healthy fats in both the nut bars and the supplements, which contributes to a feeling of fullness. But, note: there is a lot of sodium in the soups. This is beneficial for me because I normally have low blood pressure, but those with HBP, please take note!

I had opted-in for a daily booster text message from the Prolon team. This small detail helped me approach the first day with enthusiasm (seriously!). They reminded me that the calorie count on Day 1 is higher than the next four days. So far, so good, but stay tuned!

Day 2

Today I will eat about 700 calories, which is almost 500 less than yesterday. I am not feeling overly hungry, so thankfully that’s not a problem. I am clearheaded and energetic. I can tell I am already experiencing ketosis because my breath is fruity, in a slightly sickening way. I’m surprised to be in this state so quickly; it usually takes a full 2 -5 days for the body to start burning fat. I am also feeling queasy. So today is a challenge, but I am resting a bit and pushing through.
